July 30th, 2011 – How many Big Papa's can you eat?

In what is believed to be the world's first ever Pickle-in-a-Pouch eating contest Joe Zimmer, of Milwaukee, polished off the most Big Papa Dill Pickles in 5 minutes at the Germanfest Eat-A-Thon on Saturday, July 30th in Milwaukee.

In a flurry of pickle juice, Joe Zimmer and 14 other contestants raced against the clock to see who could eat a whole case (12) of Big Papa Dill Pickles in five minutes. Just one part of the four-night Eat-A-Thon.

Held on the Summerfest grounds in Milwaukee, Germanfest is North America's largest German heritage festival. This year's festival was held from Thursday, July 28th to Sunday, July 31st.

May 10th, 2011 – Here we grow again - Tankyard expansion

Van Holten’s is ready for the ground to thaw so we can continue to work on our tankyard expansion project. We currently have 127 pickle tanks above ground and are adding another 165 for a total of 292 tanks. This massive project began last fall and is scheduled to be completed before the fresh cucumbers start arriving in July. Each tank holds 1,000 bushels of cucumbers and are used to cure them before they become pickles. Adding these tanks will more than double our current capacity so we can keep up with consumer demand for our pickle-in-a-pouch!

March 7th, 2011 - Van Holten's hires new Quality Assurance/ Food Safety Manager

Van Holten's is excited to introduce Nicole Lukens as our new Quality Assurance / Food Safety Manager. Nicole will be responsible for all Quality Assurance and Food Safety activities. She will be in charge of maintaining, creating, and implementing solutions that ensure the continued quality and improvement of our products. This University of Wisconsin Madison grad joins us with a solid food industry background having worked for companies like Kraft Foods and Jack Link's.

January 3rd, 2011 – Van Holten's new Pickle-In-A-Pouch flavor…Chipotle

Van Holten’s is now shipping their #4 large, #6 Jumbo, and #9 Chipotlepickle-in-a-pouch to wholesalers and retailers nationwide. Like all of Van Holten’s pickles the chipotle flavor will be packaged individually in a stand up pouch and have a two year shelf life, with no refrigeration required. The new flavor combines the bold spice and smokiness of chipotle peppers into a pickle. “The popularity of chipotle flavored snacks and bold flavor profiles in general made it the ideal flavor for our latest Pickle-In-A-Pouch” said company president, Steve Byrnes, “additionally; our new impulse oriented packaging design will make chipotle and all our other flavors pop off the shelf.”
